Introduction to Creative Writing Course (for Adults)

‘I thought the course was really good, the tasks were very enjoyable and the environment was friendly. I also felt comfortable sharing my writing. It allowed me to use my imagination freely and Kerry Ann, as the course leader, was supportive, open and encouraging . I also learned a lot.’

– Tom, course participant

During the Introduction to Creative Writing course, you will learn about:

· Structuring stories

· Creating imaginative descriptions of place and character

· Finding your narrative voice, and using it to bring stories to life

· How to write to prompts

· How to write convincing dialogue

· Using sentence structure, vocabulary and pace to enhance your writing

There will also be time in each session for you to create beautiful, interesting and unique pieces of writing, and by the end of the course you will create your own short story.

These sessions are created to be both enjoyable and beneficial to the well-being of the course participants, there is a lot of research that demonstrates the therapeutic benefits of creative writing.

Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided, as well as a notebook for each participant to create in. There are only 4 places for this course, it’s important that the group is small enough for everyone to feel comfortable and so that the participants can also get to know each other a little, and feel comfortable in sharing their work (although this isn’t mandatory).

During the Intermediate Creative Writing Course, you will learn about everything on the first course but in greater depth, as well as:

· The planning and structuring of a novel
· Building writing into your life
· Pitching your novel
· Writing twists and/or tension

The Intermediate course is aimed at people who want to take their writing further and are interested in writing a novel or novella. As well as the course itself, attendees get the opportunity to read one another’s work and give feedback between sessions, as well as submit their own writing to the group (no more than 2000 words to make it manageable for people alongside other commitments). This course also includes drinks and light refreshments, as well as a writing journal for each participant.

The next Intermediate Creative Writing course starts in January 2026, although this one is fully booked, and the next Introduction to Creative Writing course will start in April 2026. The courses are held every other Saturday from 10.30-1.30, at the Mind Body Balance Academy in Northwich Town Centre. Course places are strictly limited and bookings are now being taken. The cost of each course is £225 (which equates to £12.50 per hour) and a £50 deposit is required to secure your place, the remaining £175 will be due by the first day of the course.
